Rob Roy is a life member of the U.S. Chess Federation, and a senior level tournament director certified by the USCF. Rob wrote a weekly newspaper column on chess for the Waterbury Sunday Republican. Rob was elected president of the Connecticut State Chess Association, and organized more than 300 chess tournaments at many locations across Connecticut, including ten annual state championships, and some national events. Rob was elected president of the New England Chess Association, Regional Vice-President of the U.S. Chess Federation, and International Tournament Coordinator for Chess Café’s “Tournament World”. Rob has won national recognition for his efforts at bringing chess into the public eye and mainstream society. Rob has won awards for membership recruitment. Rob was publisher and editor of “Connecticut Chess Magazine”. Rob was assistant editor of “Chess Horizons” magazine and wrote many articles. Rob developed and served as statistician for a statewide rating system for “Connecticut Speed-Chess”. Rob is a computer programmer and is a Microsoft Certified Professional. Rob set up and operated a computer bulletin board system where chess players all over the world connected via telephone line/modem to play chess with others, send/receive chess-related messages, and to download chess programs and data. This BBS was replaced by a website when the Internet became popular. Rob was one of the first chess instructors to teach chess in the public schools. Rob has taught chess as part of programs associated with town recreation departments, public libraries, rehabilitation centers, adult education programs, fraternal organizations, schools, colleges and universities. Many of the things Rob has done for the game of chess he has also done for the game of backgammon. Rob is a collector of chess clocks, chess sets and chess books, backgammon boards and backgammon books, and sets and books for many other board games, dice games, and card games. Rob Roy founded the “Greater Waterbury Computer Users Group”, produced a Cable TV program “Technology Update”, and volunteered for several organizations dedicated to providing personal computers and peripheral devices to people with disabilities.
